One Foxy Lady

The latest delivery.
Working on a cultural beat, I receive a rather broad assortment of baffling and, at times, worrying items: endless books on eating and sexual disorders; an embroidered tissue box cover, and even a duct tape DIY tiara kit. The most recent object to land on my desk was a rust-colored Velcro strap-on fur tie. Finally, an answer to my daily sartorial dilemma.

My first thought, considering the sanguine color and furry texture, was that I'd had the good fortune of landing on PETA's mailing list. But closer inspection revealed that it was, in fact, a wearable promotional piece pegged to the November release of "Fantastic Mr. Fox." And instead of the usual press release, it was accompanied by a rather clever business card complete with address and phone number for the film's namesake character, a "Fox About Town" and columnist for "The Gazette."

In the Wes Anderson-directed film, an animated adaptation of the beloved Roald Dahl children's book, Mr. Fox is a journalist with a secret habit for larceny. His thievery puts his wife and children in danger when it pits him against the farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean. And it's up to Mr. Fox to save the day, albeit in fantastic style.

Now, I have been excited about this movie for many months without the aid of faux pelt accoutrements. The combination of Anderson, Roald Dahl and a heavy-hitting voice-over cast including George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray is pretty unbeatable.

So what to do with my new accessory? Should I wear it around the office as a conversation piece, sport it to the movie theater on opening weekend or take it as a sign that I am meant to go as a fox (in drag?) for Halloween this year? Just think of all the poor, synthetic stuffed animals who had to die in the making of my tie.
