Women and Changing the World

"Women don't have to hate men to get ahead," former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said.

And she should know.

"I used to want to be a journalist," said Albright, who was among a score of successful women who headlined the sixth annual Woman's Conference on Tuesday that drew about 15,000 people to the convention center in Long Beach, Calif. "But when I told my husband's boss what I planned to do, he said, 'Honey, you better find something else to do. So I did."

High Energy Emmys

After enduring a bleak year, Hollywood was in the mood to party at the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards. Even the heat couldn't spoil the festive mood on the red carpet and at the after parties. Another welcome change -- the carpet fashions looked brighter with the profusion of red, white and blue dresses -- and barely any black.

LOS ANGELES -- Guess Inc. co-founder Georges Marciano...for governor of California?

Well, stranger things have happened in Golden State politics. Remember, California is the state that elected as governor a former B-movie actor and General Electric TV pitchman -- as well as Screen Actors Guild president -- named Ronald Reagan.

Kate Winslet
The red carpet may be a bit muted this awards season.

With the U.S. in recession, global markets in upheaval and labor unrest in Hollywood, jewelry and beauty publicists predict that celebrity gift suites will be more scarce, or at least more subtle. Several pre- and post-awards parties are on hold or scaled back. Vanity Fair, which decided to cancel its post-Oscar festivities last year because of uncertainty over whether the show would be halted because of the writers' strike, is said to be trimming its guest list this year.

Tinseltown has experience in toning things down.

Maria's Moment

California's first lady lured a solid-gold list of figures from government, finance, culture and entertainment to her annual Women's Conference here on Wednesday to engage in the theme, "Architects of Change."

Still Sweet on L.A.

LOS ANGELES -- Fashion week has always been a hard sell here but its apparent demise --  at least in the current form -- won't change the perception of Los Angeles as a key stop on the fashion merry go-round.

The Two Red Carpets

Every awards show has its share of chaos, and the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night was no different.
